Road Trip: By land and Sea (RORO), from Manila – Visayas – Mindanao (Day 2)

If you arrived whether in Allen or San Isidro, Samar from Matnog, Sorsogon then read further for instructions on crossing to Mindanao from Visayas otherwise, read first Day 1.

Day 2 (Visayas Island): Allen, Samar to Liloan, Leyte

  • According to Google Map, it takes 8 hours & 24 min (405.0 km) via Pan-Philippine Hwy/AH26 to reach Liloan , Leyte (Liloan Ferry Terminal). But realistically, I’d usually add +1 hour for every 100km (taking account the road traffic, pit-stop, etc) so that makes 13 hours. Speed at 80 – 100 km/h
  • Follow the PAN-Philippine Highway (AH26) thru these towns:
    • (Samar) Allen > Victoria > San Isidro > Tinambacan > Calbayog > Santa Margarita > Catbalogan > Santa Rita > (Leyte) Tacloban > Palo > Abuyog > Liloan
      • Pit-stop suggestions:
        • San Juanico Bridge (2.16 km)
        • McArthur Landing Memorial Park
        • M/V Eva Jocelyn Memorial at Anibong District Tacloban City
  • Then take a RORO from Liloan Ferry Terminal to Lipata Ferry Terminal, Surigao del Norte (Mindanao) — here you are crossing from Visayas to Mindanao. The trip took about 2.5 hours to reach Lipata, Surigao.

RORO fee:

  • Lightweight vehicles (sedan, Pickup, SUV): P2,500.00 (as of January 2017)
  • Other fees include PPA P30, passenger ticket (driver is free) P258, Environmental fee (P50). Again, total amount will depend on the number of persons — for two persons it’d cost P2,838 ONLY.

  1. Hi, thank you for this very interesting and helpful article. My two sons and I are planning for a road trip from Manila to our place in Mindanao… this blog of your is very informative for first timers like us. May I ask if you may recommend any budget hotel we can stay during our overnite stop overs? thank you and God bless.

    1. Hi Mary Ann,

      Thanks for reading.

On your first day from Manila, I’d suggest you spend your night somewhere in Bicol / Legaspi… there isn’t hotel name I can recommend but there are a lot of cheap hotels there. For your 2nd day, there is like a cheap Inn / hotel just right at the Balwharteco port in Allen, Samar. On your 3rd day, should be in Mindanao already… so you could stay somewhere in Surigao or Butuan

  5. You will have to drive up until the port of Allen, Leyte, then RORO to Matnog. No short-cuts unfortunately. 🙂

  6. Hello! My husband and I are planning to have a road trip from Manila to Davao on the 11th or 12th of Jan 2018. Are the roads passable already? Thank you!

    1. Thanks for reading.

I’m sorry but I don’t know. What I do know is the RORO fee for adults is less than 200 pesos for only, so if there are fee for kids it should be very minimal.

  7. How much is roro fare for 14seater Foton van from Matnog to Allen port?
How long does it take to drive from Allen port to San Juanico bridge?
And from San Juanico to Tacloban?
    Thank you.

  9. Hi,
Thank you for a very good blog.
Very helpful and timely especially we intend to do this year.
    I just have a question,
Do you recommend any inn or spots where we could spend the night? For each day?
Planning to do a 3-5 day trip for this one. Going to cagayan de oro city.

    1. Hi Dean,

      Thanks for asking.

3-5 day trip sounds a plan. I’d suggest on your first day, you spend your night in Legaspi, Albay where Mayon Volcano is at. There are decent hotels there you can find in booking.com, you may wanna check it out. I dont recommend specific hotels/inns at this time.

Then 2nd stop over would be in Tacloban, use booking.com to check out available hotels. I’d always recommend you booked ahead.

Then 3rd stop over would be in Surigao. There is Enchanted River, Siargao, and a lot more attractions.

      Let me know.

      Alfred
