Road Trip: By land and Sea (RORO), from Manila – Visayas – Mindanao (Day 1)

If you are wondering how to get to Visayas and Mindanao by land, then this guide is for y’all.

RoRo trip starts from southern Luzon to points in the Visayas. Usually the route is from Manila >  Quezon Province > Camarines Sur > Albay (Bicol), and Sorsogon(this is where Matnog Ferry Terminal is located. You first ferry terminal from Luzon to Visayas).

The shortest land routes from Luzon to the Visayas and Mindanao are through these islands.

You can travel non-stop to your destination in Mindanao, but I would recommend you do it in 3-days adventure, giving you more time to enjoy and take pit-stops at the beautiful places along the way.

Route Details:

Day 1 (Souther Luzon): Manila to Matnog, Samar

  • If you are coming from the northern parts of Manila, go towards SLEX, and make an exit to Sto Tomas Star tollway (Batangas), continue until you reached the traffic light, then turn right. See pictures below:
  • Then follow the PAN-Philippine Highway (AH26) thru these towns:
    • Santo Tomas > San Pablo City > Tiaong (Quezon Province) > Candelaria > Lucena > Pagbilao > Atimonan > Calauag > Tagkawayan > Sipocot (Camarines Sur) > Naga > Legaspi (Albay) > Daraga > Sorsogon City (Sorsogon) > Casiguran > Irosin > Matnog (Ferry Terminal)
    • Estimated 540 Kilometers total — depends on where you are coming from Manila.
  • Take a RORO from Matnog Ferry Terminal to Allen, Samar (Visayas) — here you are crossing from Luzon to Visayas island. The trip took about 1.5 hour to reach Allen, Samar. There are three ports of destination to Samar you can choose from Matnog Ferry:
    • #1 Balwhartico Port (old port, as of this writing they are still operational)
    • #2 Santa Clara Shipping:
      • Facebook page
      • Tel #: (054) 477 7499
      • every 2-3 hrs interval @24 hours operation
    • #3 San Isidro (FastCat Ferry)
    • fastcat-philippines_new-route-matinog-sanisidro

RORO fee:

  • Lightweight vehicles (sedan, Pickup, SUV): P960.00 (as of January 2017)
  • Other fees include terminal fee (P129), passenger ticket (driver is free) P110, Environmental fee (P50). These are minimal fees only, usually ranges from 20, 50, 129, & 110. Total amount will depend on the number of persons — for two persons it’d cost P1,279 ONLY.

Map:

Documents to bring:

  • Vehicle’s OR / CR (or Sales Invoice if your vehicle do not have plate #) — it doesn’t have to be original, photocopies will do. Reproduce it at least 2 copies. The ports do not require a retaintion of these documents so be sure you get it back after you’ve paid everything.
  • Driver’s License — you can’t travel without it. You don’t know what will happen along the way.

      1. Hi Lito,

No, that is not possible OR and CR are important — photocopy will do.

        Thanks

    2. I would like to ask, i want to bring the jeepney car from davai to manila by roro. Please guide and help me to fix. Thanks

      1. I do not know if you got your answers since this was 2020. I just happen to research the route too. I have traveled from Manila (Lipa) to Mindanao in stages. The first stage above is precise (I traveled southbound last year sometime in January). I proceeded to drive from Southern Leyte to Surigao. There are many ports you can catch from Southern Leyte to Surigao since I traveled last year. From Maasin, a new service from Padre Burgos to Lipata was available, twice a day. From Liloan, there were many shipping companies ferrying to Surigao Port; in Liloan, the reliable shipping is FastCat, two times a day which cost more. The old port of San Ricardo located at the southern tip of the San Francisco island of Southern Leyte, was temporarily damaged from typhoon and was inoperable. But, last year, I think the service from San Ricardo to Lipata has resumed. It is serviced by Montenegro Shipping, an hour to Lipata by ship, 4 hours from Liloan to Surigao Port and 4 hours from Padre Burgos to Lipata. PadreBurgos to Lipata cost around 4k pesos one way, same with Liloan to Surigao port. Once you are in Mindanao, sky is the limit. You can drive from Surigao to Butuan easily. The road is decently paved. From Butuan to Davao, the highways are wide and asphalted most of the time. There wereGoing north from Mindanao to Manila, is similar to going south. It would be cheaper to use the Lipata San Ricardo if it is operational. Otherwise, Lipata to Padre Burgos or Surigao Port to Liloan. Proceed with the easterly route from Liloan to Tacloban via Sogod. It is around 5 hours from Liloan to Tacloban. From Tacloban, you cross San Juanico Bridge to Samar. Samar’s road infrasture is so poor that it took me at least 5 hours to travel a 110 kilometer distance to Allen. From Allen, take the RoRo to Matnog. Once in Matnog, you can drive leisurely to Manila passing the Mayon Volcano. Take your time and enjoy.
some occasional road construction that slows you down.

    3. hi sir good day po.tanong ko lng.plan kasi namin pamilya magbakasyon ng toledo city cebu dito kami manggaling sa manila.alam nio po ba pinakamabilis ng route at ilan oras abutin manila to toledo?maraming salamat po

      1. Hi Macoy,

Good day. There is a comment down here from Benjie that had some directions to Cebu City. Please scroll down and read through further more.

  1. Hello

Can I ask you some questions about your trip, as I am planning on making the same trip later this year.
Can you give some idea of the road and traffic conditions? Was it all single lane highway the whole journey? Traffic was light or heavy congestion with some delays?
Did you make any overnight stops? Any recommendations?

    Thanks for any feedback.
    Regards,
    David

    1. Hi David,

      Thanks for asking.

Where is your point of origin and destination?

The road is pretty good except there were some parts of in the Visayas road (Samar-Leyte) that weren’t so smooth – but it was short distance only and usally potholes caused by heavy rain and trucks. There weren’t really major road blockage at all.

The traffic was only when you reach a certain city/town, but that’s nothing compared to the traffic in Metro Manila. 🙂

Depending on your destination, but ours was 1,500 KM, Manila – Bukidnon. If you drive non-stop , you sure will be at your destination after 24 hours at 90-100 km/h speed.

I suggest you just savor every place, stop, take a picture of the scenary you’ll be passing by as there tons. Plan a 3 day trip, 500KM each day and you’ll surely enjoy everything.

      Enjoy!

      1. Thank you so much for your feedback, which is most valuable.
We will drive from Manila to Davao City and our car is Ford Ranger Wildtrak, so I’m pretty sure it will handle the journey fine.
We are planning to take 4 or 5 days, to stop and explore along the journey.
One other point, did you feel that there are any security threats alongs the way, bandits etc or am I being paranoid?

        Best wishes
        David

      2. Hi there! This information is really helpful to me. Me & my family are moving to Cebu & are planning to make a road trip next week. May i ask, if the final destination is Cebu, which route would be more scenic but not so costly? via Masbate or Leyte?

Thank you very much. Appreciate your suggestion.

        Dawny

      3. Hi there.

I am so glad I was able to find this blog.. I am planning on going to Davao by land too this coming February or March 2019. This is so helpful not a lot of people are documenting their MNL-DVO trip like you do. And I reckon there are not much people taking and making this crazy route hehehe..

Is there a way that you can share the entire article to me via my email add? Please…

        jonathanteylan@gmail.com

      4. Hi sir ur blog is very helpful..but sir can i ask if what route we will take if we are going to cebu…because here in ur blog going to mindanao..what route we will take fr. Allen to cebu

  2. Nice to hear we are neighbors. Davao is only 2-4 hours drive from my place in Bukidnon. I’m glad you chance upon this blog.

Your pickup will surely conquer those little potholes – they are nothing. I brought with me my Hilux too, last year.

The people you see along the way are very friendly. If it’s your first time crossing the islands, dont travel at night (i.e. 7pm onwards), it doesn’t mean though there are bad people at night but it simply implies avoiding unprecedented scenario (flat tire, etc) to happen during night fall.

Please do ask more questions, I’m glad to answer.

    Regards,

    Alfred

    1. Hi Alfred

Yes we are not far apart at all, must arrange a get together once we are fully settled into our new home.
Did you have to pre-book the ro-ro ferries, or it’s OK to just arrive and purchase tickets when you get there?

      Thanks,
      David

    2. Ask q lng poh manila to butuan land and sea trip, pgdating b ng Allen samar deretso n b gun hanggang butuan, o sasaky p ng ferry?

      1. Dun n din mgbbyad ng fare sa ferry , how much kaya kpg L300 ang sasakyan?

      2. From Allen in northern Samar, you drive towards Tacloban in northern Leyte. You proceed with the easterly route passing the eastern seaboard of Leyte going into Mahaplag of Southern Leyte, then proceed southerly to Liloan or to San Ricardo to catch the ferry to Lipata in Surigao. Once in Surigao, you captured Mindanao already. It is around 2 hours from Surigao to Butuan.

  3. Hi David,

Agreed. Let’s meet up sooner than later. Send me an email alfred n roa at gmail dot com (no spaces in between my username).

No, pre-booking is not necessary. Just book right after you arrived at the ferry terminal.

    Regards,

    Alfred

      1. Hello sir.. Im planning to enjoy road trip with my wife from manila to cebu by car, mirage G4. I just want to know if the routes of matnug to cebu city still available and how mucj is the fare rates for ferry?

Would like to ask your advice and thank for having this site you have..

      2. I’ve done that already last June this year and so far the road is ok but along the route to Samar-Leyte theres alot of road construction. As well as going to Bicol but it is tolerable. I’ve been warned also by my colleague to use the diversion road when going Bicol instead of the “bitukang manok”.
As for the case of ferries, the ferries are running every 2 hours at Matnog-Allen Port of Samar. Then Samar-Leyte trip again (beware of curves along Samar route as it is uphill too). Then at Leyte, I use the Palompon-Bogo (Cebu) route schedule at 0730H. I think thiers also a 1300H departure time, meaning Leyte-Cebu roro trip is not that many.

Btw, i drive alone using vios 1.3 mt.. happy trip..

  4. Nice blog. Bookmarked it for later. Been wanting to do this for the longest time, but they say it’s not worth the trouble. I’ve always wanted to do a solo drive from Manila to CDO (and maybe some soul searching along the way LOL). Do you recommend it?

    1. Soul searching huh! Don’t go any farther, they will just come. 🙂

The beautiful people and places you get to meet along the way is always worth it. I dont recommend driving alone though,

  5. Hi Alfred,

We’re planning to tour the whole Mindanao province via land and sea. We plan to start in Bicol passing through Samar and Leyte and then to Surigao. We want to visit all the provinces as much as possible. On return back to Manila, we want to try the long route from Dapitan to Visayas then to Manila. Considering the situation in Marawi, is it safe to do this travel by November of this year. Is there any place in Mindanao that is not passable or safe to visit? Hope you can give me idea on other places to visit in Mindanao. Thanks.

    1. Hi Haidee,

Great to hear we have the same list on our bucket at least for road-trips. I want to try the long route too, I had been crossing Luzon-Mindanao for like 4th time already…but I always start in Bicol due to road familiarity.

Anyway, is it safe to do the long route at this time specifally Martial is on-going? Yes! The more it is safe there because of the military troops visible anywhere in everyplace. The down side though is, heavy traffic due to military check points.

If you got a chance, shot me an email so I can provide some more details.

      Alfred

  6. Hello Alfred,

Im really glad you posted this blog as Ive been searching for info regarding the road conditions from Allen to Tacloban. Im planning to travel from Manila to Davao this year – sometime November and I’m concerned about the road conditions from Allen to Tacloban. The last time I passed there was in 2010, and cars would have a hard time getting through because the roads were really bad and some were under construction. I didn’t have a problem then as I was driving a pick-up. Now I plan to travel from Manila to Mindanao again but I will be bringing a family van – Chrysler Town and Country. Given that the van has a lower ground clearance, will I be able to pass through from Allen to Tacloban ? May I also know what route you took, was it via Catbalogan /Calbayog?

The road from Tacloban onward to Mindanao was good in 2010, has it changed? I know the road from Surigao to Davao and to most areas in Mindanao is good as I often travel around Mindanao. Thanks in advance for the info.

    Cheers,

    Rene

    1. Hi Rene,

You should still be able to cross just fine. Last year, I’m seeing a lot of Sedan crossing the islands too and they were OK.

      Thanks,

      Alfred

    1. Hi Eduardo

I have just completed the journey from Manila to Davao. We took it easy and made the trip in 5 days. No issues, roads a bit rough in places due to ongoing road repairs.
To answer your question, I think it will depend a lot on what type of motorcycle you will ride and how experienced you are with long distance riding.
There are a lot of trucks on the road, who don’t show a lot of respect to motorcycles, so I wouldn’t want to do the ride on a small capacity bike. Also the road surface in lots of places is a bit rough, so you will need a bike with good suspension.
Other than that I see no reason why you shouldn’t make the journey on a motorcycle.

      Cheers
      David

  7. Hi Alfred

Yes we arrived in Davao safe and sound. Only there for 2 days then had to fly back to Dubai. We will move across full time at the end of December.

    Cheers
    David

    1. Hi Ralph,

We drove all the way crossing the Luzon to Visayas on our 1st day. We spent our 1st night at the Balwharteco port in Allen, Samar. Inside the port just right after you alight the RORO and it is beside the Exit gate, there is an INN (i forgot the name) — that’s where we stayed.

Mind you, the INN is not a fancy one, but enough to take a rest. Please do take note as well, that you couldn’t do some much in Allen, make sure you’ve got everything you need.

Still, I’d suggest if you’re with Family… spend your night in Legaspi, Albay. There are a lot of hotels you can choose from.

      Alfred

  8. Perfect! Thank you so much. I will start my travel in few hours from now. God bless and appreciate your blog! 🙂

    1. Wishing you the best and safe journey.

Please let us know once you arrived your destination.

      Take care!

  9. Hi Ralph
We stayed in 4 different hotels as we made the journey over 5 days. The hotels were adequate but not luxurious. Basic but clean, and not expensive. Good luck on your journey.

    Regards,
    David

  10. Hi Ralph,
Do you have any update about the road from samar to matnog is it passable due to typhoon urduja?please if you have any update coz my partner will travel this coming wednesday from manila to matnog ferry..thanks a lot…

  11. Hi,

is the road from manila to matnog still passable? i am worried because we are scheduled to drive home in mindanao through pick up truck this 27th of December. thanks a lot

  12. Hi David,

    Warm greeting!
Im planning to bring my car for a 2weeks family gathering in Butuan City, Would you recommend bringing the car there by landtrip & roro is cheaper than have it freight all the way from MNL TO BXU by 2Go ship? Coz if by 1st option, ill be traveling with my 4yo child plus a driver only. Is it worth spending 2days on the road? Than taking our flight and car by cargo with the driver on ship. What you think is more expensive?

Appreciate so much your inputs. Im quiet confused ☺️

Thank you very much for your help.

    Sheena

  13. Hi Sheena,

My own opinion, if shipping the car via 2go, since I’ve tried this already CDO – Manila. I think you are looking into spending 10K more than driving it all the way to Butuan. Plus, the cost of your plane ticket. Apparently, landtrip is cheaper in this case.

If is it worth it? It depends!

You can also travel by plane and avail the rent-a-car services in Butuan.

    Thanks,

    Alfred

  14. Hi Alfred,
Thank you so much for the reply.

After typhoon basyang hit, is it passable all the roads?

How much fuel u filled in your car? 2x fulltank one wY from mnl to butuan?

    Plan to leave feb 22

    Appreciate your reply.

    Thank you very much

    1. Hi Sheena,

I cannot be certain about the roads whether if it is passable or not. It may be helpful to call DPWH regional office to be sure.

I brought with me a pickup truck with 70 Liters full tank, with my case, two full-tanks should be good. But, as a rule of thumb… always fill up your tank once it’s half empty for your own peace of mind. Who knows, the gas station ahead is closed or what-not?

      Alfred

  15. Hi.we (family) are planning to take the road from manila to davao city this april.can you pls give us ideas where and when to stop for an overnight stay.it is a road trip vacation actually.we want to stop over to places, but dont have the idea what road to take.. we’re a first timer drivers(me,husband, son) to take the long drive.we agreed to speed 70-90kms/hour.and spend the night to a safe and convenient inn/hotel…thank you💗

    1. On your 1st overnight, I’d say, you sleep over in Legaspi City where the Mayon Volcano is at. I am not sure though, if during that time the erruption warning is already down. There are quite decent hotel/inns there you can choose from. Places to visit: Cagsawa Ruins, Daraga Church, Sumlang Lake, etc

On your 2nd night, stop by in Tacloban… book a hotel ahead in case you’ll arrive at the place in the night. There couple of tourist spots there: Macarthur Park, San Juanico Bridge, Yolanda memorial monuments, etc.

Your 3rd night, probably be in Davao already.

  16. hi question lang po from matnog to allen using private vehicle dies it need a document like pnp motor vehicle certifcate for clearance since this port used for transporting smuggled vehicles? and how is the road in samar is it scary like no street lights houses and mile gap of gas stations or pit stops?

    1. As for the requirements, I can’t speak for the current date but, 1 year ago… what were required was OR/CR and, driver’s license. Assuming, your OR/CR vs Driver’s license belongs to the same name. Otherwise, you’ll probably need a Deed of Sale or some sort of authorization from the owner and owner’s valid IDs. Better yet call Matnog port to make sure.

There is no street lights, yes. Maybe some streets in the town proper have lights. You should always make sure you Gas tank is full as a rule of thumb.

  17. Hi Can you pls give us idea how to go in Butuan port? from manila travel by land kami to matnog we have car. Pero wla kmi idea anung Roro ang pwede namin sakyan para mkarating ng Butuan port.

    Thank you so much,

    1. Please check out Day 1 – 3 in my blog.

But if you are asking if there is a RORO from Matnog all the way to Butuan, No. You have to take 2 RORO trips, 1) Matnog and 2) Allen Port to Surigao

  18. Hi. I am planning to bring my 16 ft canter truck from manila to cotabato by land travel.. Can you pls give me estimates of the expenses / fees i need to pay in my travel. ( including the roros from manila to visayas to mindanao) How many gallons of diesel is needed. It’s my first land travel pls help. Thank you. I am planning this by nxt week.

    1. I dont know how much fuel consumption in terms of 1L : KM ratio so I couldn’t provide you an accurate answer. To give you a comparison, a pickup truck with 1L : 12KM ratio would at least require 5K total to reach your destination.

As for the fare, I dont have an update anymore of the rates.

Overall expense, I’ve suggest you prepare 30-35K for the whole travel expense (i.e. fuel, fare, meal, etc).

  19. Hi Alfred,

Which one is better route when going to Samar? Matnog-Allen or Matnog-San Isidro? Do they allow dogs in the car travelling by RoRo? what docs do i need to bring for my dogs and are there any fees?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Gerald,

I have only tried Matnog-Allen, which takes about 1-2 hour. I dont know about the latter… but what I do know is, the distance from Allen to San Isidro port is 16KM.

You need to get a travel certificate for your dog, that one requirement for sure. If there are fees should be minimal.

      Good luck.

      Alfred

      1. Thank you Alfred, I will stick with the Allen route 🙂

btw, where do i get the travel certificate for my dogs? do the shipping lines provide those?

        thanks again…

      2. HOW TO GET A LOCAL TRANSPORT PERMIT FOR YOUR PET.

  24. Hi Alfred,

Just want to inquire if it would be enough to bring a hard copy map or a GPS for the travel from Manila to Mindanao. Any recommendation of a specific brand of GPS gadget should there be?

    Thanks in advance.

    Fel

  25. The route is not hard to follow, just stay on the main highway all the way unless you do some side-trips. We did use a mix of GoogleMaps and the GPS Navigation in our truck. You should take note that there is not always a GPRS signal available to use GoogleMaps, and the road network is not well mapped for a lot of SatNav systems.

  26. Good day! I am planning to travel to Cebu
again mid this month but this time I will be taking the route via Mindoro. Please share the best route from Manila – Batangas – via Mindoro and thru the Western Visayas region. Will really appreciate your guidance same as the Bicol and Leyte route that you have elaborated above specifically the time to catch the RORO. Thank you.

    1. Hi Carlos,

I haven’t had the chance to go to this route yet. This is my bucket list and will definitely share as soon as it will happen.

      Thanks for reading.

      Alfred

    2. Hope this helps 🙂 we did this 6 years ago about road condition I’m not sure if still the same. But by thinking that it’s a PAN Phil Hiway it’s well-taken care. Just have all the RORO schedules so that you won’t be waiting for so long at the pier.

Batangas Pier to Calapan (Roro) 3-4 Hours
      Calapan to Roxas (Drive)
Roxas to Caticlan (Roro) 2-3 Hours
      Caticlan to Dumangas (Drive)
Dumangas to Bacolod (Roro) 2-3 Hours
Bacolod to Dumaguete via Mabinay (Drive)
      Dumaguete to Cebu (Roro)

      1. Just an option to Alex comment. I talked to a friend who completed a Batangas – Cebu route land trip. She recommends taking the Bacolod – San Carlos route, which is only 2 hrs land trip, then San Carlos – Toledo 1.5hrs via RORO and
Toledo to Cebu City 2 hrs.

  27. Thank you so much Alex, really appreciate your inputs. Now, all I need is the schedules of the RORO’s. Will try to find it hopefully it can be found in the internet also.
    Kind regards

  28. Yes, I think the Bacolod – San Carlos route is also an option. Will surely consider it as well.

Thanks so much for your input. Cheers!

  29. hi there I am planning to go to Davao City, is my sedan can do such a long travel? Or it may takes like overheating along the way? what do you think? thanks in andvance for the reply

    1. It all depends on how conditioned your car is. Any type of vehicle without proper maintenance shouldn’t be taken for a long drive.

    1. itry mo sa googlemap ang estimated km ng destination mo at idivide mo lng sa gas consumption ng mirage. ex 1500km/20kpl(km per liter) = 75L.

  30. Hi alfred. I noticed that all the discussions re leyte-surigao route is via liloan. How is that different from San Ricardo port? Which is more convenient to cross surigao, via liloa or san ricardo. I have seen in the map that San Ricardo is right across surigao……

    1. Hi Jane,

The main difference is the distance. Liloan vs San Ricardo port is about 42KM or an hour travel, both has pros and cons. If you are coming from Manila, you’ll reach Liloan port first before San Ricardo. It’ll take about 3 hours via RORO to reach Surigao. If you chose San Ricardo, it’ll take an hour more to reach San Ricardo… and 2 more hours via RORO to Surigao, which is basically the same time.

For me, it doesn’t matter as long as there is available boat by the time I arrived.

      Thanks

  31. Anyone planning a road trip this december (21st) to Mindanao? I am planning to take the routes of Batangas-Mindoro-Caticlan- Iloilo- Bacolod-Dumaguete-Dapitan.

    1. Hi. My husband and I are planning a road trip this december 21 from Laguna to CDO. It’s our first time to travel and we haven’t make any itinerary yet.

  32. Hi, This is very helpful. Planning to drive from Manila to Samar. Are you familiar with the “Bituka ng Manok” road in Lucena. I have passed this via Bus. But it will be our first time to drive and we are just using sedan. Is there any other route?

  33. Hi. My family will be going to butuan on dec 19. We plan to have it on a 3day trip,we have a 6 month old baby and 2kids kasi on this trip. Do you have any suggestion where to stay in legazpi and tacloban? Also, what time do u recommend in crossing matnog-samar and liloqn-lipata? What roro can u recommend? Thank you very much.

    1. travelling with an infant seems so risky especially on a long joirney but i dont know that much.
wla den aq idea papuntang mindanao kc byahing cebu aq nun (palompon-bogo).
ayo-ayo sa byahi ug enjoy the scenery.

  34. your information is indeed very helpful.
i have been searching for a detailed trip advisory and yours is the only complete one.
one question though, the RORO trips are booked online or at the port itself?

    thanks,

    JP

  35. hi sir!

    1. Hi, Sorry for the late reply. You just need OR/CR of the car and your drivers license. That’s all what’s needed but to give you peace of mind, you could ask an authorization from the owner itself with valid Id for verification — but you only need to show it if an authority is holding you for such.

  36. Boss plan ko dis june or july trip to cagayan de oro using motor sniper 150 galing ako ng cavite saan ang pinakamabilis na route to go roro terminal tnx

    1. wala koy nakita na problema traveling a truck from CDO-Manila. Lots of drivers are doing that everyday. In fact, there is a Philtranco buses traveling from Manila – CDO and Vice-versa on the same route.

  37. Hi! First off, great blog! Will be making my first trip from manila to tacloban this coming April. I am quite excited, really.

I would like to ask, since you have run this route a lot; are there numerous gasoline stations on the route, specially from quezon to bicol and the visayas. reason why I ask is, my vehicle has a drinking problem 🙂

It really loves is premium stuff. On a good city ride, it consumes about 6 klm/liter… which basically means, it will be dry by the time I reach 400 klms, which is kindda scary. So i plan to top uo every 250 klms or so 🙂

    1. There are enough gas stations from Quezon to Bicol, before leaving the region (Bicol) ensure to get a full tank. In the Visayas, most gas stations are within the City already but you shouln’t run out of gas until the next refilling station, just make sure you don’t travel at night coz most of them are closed.

      1. Well, I did it. took me about 24 hours from manila to tacloban. Took 1.5 tank of gas or about 120 liters of gasoline, one way. There a lot of new roads in the Bicol region. Some are not yet fixed. Really best to travel by day for someone who has not done this before, like me. Oh, and gas prices are really high in Atimonan Quezon and in Bicolandia…

  38. hello Sir
    good day,
please needs your good info, i will travel alone by land/sea my SUV from Manila-bicol-samar- cebu this end of March, but the car was named under my wife. what document i need to bring with? to be sure not to hold at matnog port and ormoc?

    thanks for your reply.

  39. Hi Sir, me and my husband are planning to go on road trip from cavite to Tacloban this coming Holy Week. May i know po magkano inabot ng gas niyo from Cavite to Matnog? Thank you po in advance.

  40. Hi,

May I ask what vehicle did you use for this trip. I have a car and planning to travel soon with my dog. Is it possible and safe to travel that far using just a car?

    Thanks,

  41. I used a toyota hilux during this trip but your sedan should be good to go too, it is the same vehicle I brought on my very first trip. Your dog will surely love the trip.

    Have a safe one!

  42. hello Sir,

My wife and I are travelling tomorrow from Baguio City to General Santos City. We are planning to bring our Ford Ecosports (2015 Model) and I would like to ask where can we possibly get the Vehicle Clearance for the said purpose? All we have are photocopies of the OR / CR of the car with my wife’s name on it. Will that be enough for paper/documentary requirements? I hope to hear from you soon as we are planning to travel asap.

    Thank you.

    1. Yes, those are the two most important documents you need to bring. You should be OK with that. There is no need for a clearance. Once you arrived in the ferry terminal, just present OR/CR and pay the necessary fees and you’re good to go.

  43. Hi Sir Alfred,

Been looking of a travel blog from luzon to mindanao and your blog is a jackpot. We are planning to do the same next month and this blog will help us a lot.

I have a question since you didn’t mention it here. What hotel did you stay during your night stop and where? I really need to gather information to have a smooth travel and of course with the help of your detailed blog.

Can you please share the information to my email.

    Appreciate it,
    Brendon

    1. Hi Brendon,

Thanks for the compliment and dropping a comment.

On our first night, we stayed at a tourist / travellers inn inside Balwharteco ferry port in Allen, Samar. Our 2nd night, we were already in Surigao, sorry but I couldn’t remember which place we stayed but it was an apartelle somewhere in the city.

      Alfred

  45. Just for the information of everybody reading this useful vlog. I just did a land trip from cavite to Bohol last may with my family of 7 using Isuzu alterra. It took us almost 3 days since it was an election season and most of the piers were congested by that time. But now I think would be much better. This how we started.
day1, departed gentry cavite 4am and arrived matnog port 6pm (right it took us 14 hours coz i’m the only driver with moderate rest in between) stayed overnight at irosin.
day2, tough day to get a roro going to allen samar because of election season. But managed to depart bit late of the day and arrived 9pm at samar port. While cruising (roro) on the way to samar managed to prepare for expected 8 hours drive to leyte.
Day3, Arrived leyte (bato port) early morning to catch roro going to ubay for a 9am. but for unknown reason ferry delayed for 4 hours and departed only 1pm. arrived ubay Bohol 2:30pm.

We took the same route going back to cavite but much easier and more organized because of early bookings (online) at super ferry.

was it worth it? yes it was and i’m planning to do it again… Cheers!!!

  46. Hi Elmer,

What a wonderful road trip experience you had there. Thanks for sharing. I haven’t been able to do long drives lately and wanted to follow the same route you had.

What was the estimated cost if I may ask?

    Thanks

  47. Hi.
Every year my wife n I ride our motorcycle from Baguio City to Dumaguete. Have always ridden to Batangas, ferried to Mindoro, rode across and catch a ferry to Cataclan, ride across n catch a ferry to Bacalod n ride to Saiton, our final destination. About 1050 km plus 3 ferries.
We wish to try another route. Have though about riding down through Naga City. We wish to use roads as much as possible, and use ferries as little as possible. Time and cost are not important. We just want another new route/experience.
    Recomendations?
    Thanks! Great site!!

  48. You can take the route all the way to Matnog port (Bicol region), ride a ferry to samar island… then drive to Ormoc city. From there, you can take another ferry to North of Cebu (Bago city)… then another drive all the way to Santander, then Dumaguete. This I think the longest drive, if that’s what you are after.

Another is Matnog port via Masbate City.

  49. hi,
anyone who did travel from manila to davao recently (within 2020)? please share experiences and suggestions po. Gonna travel with Sedan car and Family, highly appreciated if anyone will advise something.

  50. Hello po, is it ok po ba to drive from manila to davao using a toyota wigo car? May mga matitirik po bang roads na madadaanan? Thanks so much😊. Any reply is highly appreciated😊

      1. As far as I know, the road leading to Mindanao from Manila via Matnog, Sorsogon to Allen, Samar are all passable for all types of vehicles.
I myself is due to travel to Cebu by land with my motorcycle taking the same route up to Ormoc, Leyte then by RORO to Cebu City port but due to the MECQ at the moment will defer and wait until the quarantine issues eases. Travel safe.

  51. hi, good day, mg inquire lng po ako, my family from camarines sur planning to visit general santos city..may we know the route and fare please. Thank you
